The FDA never approved this drug for morning sickness and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the maker of this drug, paid a $2 billion settlement in a civil lawsuit that involved allegations that GSK illegally promoted its Zofran drug to be prescribed to expectant mothers. About 1,250 women have reported that using Zofran (ondansetron) during the first trimester of pregnancy, including 58 (4.7%) who had a baby with a birth defect.
Zofran® became a popular choice among doctors who were recommending drugs for mothers suffering from extreme morning symptoms. Recently, however, Abbot Laboratories have been under a lot of pressure and lawsuits as more and more have determined Zofran® as a leading cause to many birth defects from mothers taking this drug.
Zofran® has been linked to numerous side effects including: spina bifida, heart defects, cleft palet, PPHN, Autism/ADHD/Behavior Problems, Club Foot, Internal Malformation and lung defects. Reports indicated that up to 20% of babies born to women taking Zofran during their pregnancy saw some form of birth defect upon delivery. The risk of birth defect is 30% higher for babies born to mothers who took Zofran in the first trimester. The major defect exhibiting in babies have been various types of heart problems. Zofran has doubled the risk of Atrial and Ventricular Septal Defects (also may be know as “hole in the heart”). ASD and VSD are holes in the upper and lower chambers of the heart which can cause major circulation issues in the baby.
